ENGLISH VERSION

The Sweet Life Society are a band based in Turin that plays a new genre of music called electro swing. Very on fashion in England and France, this genre of music melts jazz, swing, hip hop, electronics with acoustic instruments and vocals in something  new  that has a vintage flavour. Sweet Life Society are the first Italian project oriented to this kind of vintage inspired music. I met the two founders, Gabriele Concas and Matteo Marini in a festival here in Vicenza called Festambiente, dedicated  to environment consciousness, where they arrived directly from Glastonbury Festival where they played just the night before this interview. SLS usually play with a small orchestra, a singer and a MC, they have  a good success in Anglo- Saxons countries ( they have toured in America for a month) and this summer they’re going to play in the most important  festivals in UK.  They have currently  two singles out  wich are named “Prima di ogni prima” and “My sound”, this one featured by the Italian harmonic trio Sorelle Marinetti.

Due to bad weather you played without the orchestra, in a smaller  team. How many elements  are usually  there in your orchestra?

Gabriele Concas: “It is a modular orchestra that has 3 horns maximum, bass, manouche guitar, the singer Giulietta who was there tonight tonigh, another singer named Moreno, who is Roy Paci’s MC and has a group named Steela that has done nice things, and the two of us. We have 9 members on stage, normally, plus the electronic part, because we are producers, actually. ”

How come just Electro Swing?

“We have not decided it, but it’s something that happened. Iin 2008, French band from Paris called Caravan Palace founded this genre. The electro swing is basicly perceived as the sampling of vintage music, so swing, New Orleans, Manouche, with an electronic arrangement. In the 80’s and 90’s many swing music  samples have been taken, reproduced and re arranged in electronic and  and  hip hop tone, the Caravan Palace were the first to create a band that somehow links electronics and acoustic music played in that direction. The Caravan Palace are a band similar to ours. ”

You have opened with “The Ballad of Mack the Knife from” The Threepenny Opera”. Do you think that this can immediately characterize the gig?

“I’ve actually put an opening track that would give the mood, since the people were sitting, that could be a song that would attract the attention and say:” we are here “, as it was an evening to create. The premise was different, I think for all of you also. “

You have just returned from Glastonbury, you opened Torino Jazz Festival and have toured in America …

“… We did it in May, a month.”

What about the problem of the accent? Is often said that people can hear the italian accent and  because of this maybe we’re a bit “boycotted”? You have some songs in italian.

“We have tracks in italian but we could say that we have a very central and northern European aptitude about the arrangements and musical bases. Let’s say that having made two very big concert in Glastonbury,  Shangri La’s, which is a big stage of the festival in front of 400.000 people, we had our MC Moreno singing in Salentino dialect, not even in Italian, I would say that perception is ultra successful: it works and people  like it. “Prima di ogni prima”, our single released by Warner two weeks ago, has worked very well in Glastonbury, even though it’s  an Italian song and there were no Italians Glastonbury’s or there were very few. ”

And what about USA? How did they welcome you?

“Very well. We have followed a path that is finding an Italian direction but actually we work a lot abroad: the experience at the Glastonbury is not just one date, this summer we’re going to do 7 very big festival in England such as Bestival and Boomtown. We’ve always played a lot abroad because somehow we find a wider range. In the United States this is a new situation that currently has no band, there are some producers and about the electro swing nights that  at us are increasing: we have a night that now is 4 years old, the next season will be the fifth, they are only at the first season. ”

And this vintage style that perhaps bonds a bit with burlesque?

“The feedback  I have had in the United States is that, actually, unlike Italy especially, live music works much more: concerts work in America, people are used to go out and see the drums, bass and the electric guitar, which is a very positive thing because we are losing a lot of this in Italy and this is a problem because I  think that it has a value. In America dance nights are less on fashion, unless there is a big guest and then it’s a big event. This means that there is more attention for the struggle because, in the end, playing live is a struggle, the effort to go to the rehearsal room and prepare a live because, however, the limit of a DJ set is a bit that one: now you can go to Internet and get an entire playlist of a famous dj who puts it online and you can play and work on it, not to mention those who play the evergreen classics with things that work. In some ways that is an ended cycle because there’s not an upstream research work done in the rehearsal room and that thing is actually music. We’ve been playing  a lot in Europe for 4 years so far, we are quite present, but we don’t like to be seen as  the ones that say “Fuck Italy,” said roughly, but also because in any case a situation like this in Vicenza is quite unique: now in Italy there are no more festivals in the summer and no more clubs in the winter. Things are going very well for us in England where we had sold out in London in early May with 1,000 people in a very large venue, Village Underground. We like to stay in “healthy” situations, even the trip we made in the United States: we were in Denman Island, Vancouver archipelago, an island of 1,000 people. We arrived there and everyone knew who we were, we played in front of old people and children and it was a matter of empathy, hugs, perception that somehow we gave something and people have responded to that: we ate together and I think this is the added value of this work . Then there are many other dynamics that can lead you to think of anything else: fame, money, however currently there aren’t even those one, then it’ s better to think about the things that make you fall asleep quiet and serene. ”

Nowadays the DJ set is a form of entertainment adopted by many artists, some are accompanied by classical and acoustic instruments such as the violin, trumpet, etc. Then there are situations like Gotan Project, or others where the turntablism is along with small orchestras or singers etc., turning the show into a real concert. When did this type of hybridization can be defined as simple DJ set and when as a real concert? Tonight, you did a dj set or a concert? There was also a very good singer.

The basic difference is that in  the dj-set you are free to play other things and maybe then rearrange them to sing along, as Giulietta did tonight. In a live show like Gotan Project’s  or ours, you play your own productions. Then, there is also a sensitivity in the dj-set because of the choice in the selection: if you play the evergreeen you pave the  way because you tend to go on the safe side because they are  part olf the total imaginary, but maybe if I do research maybe from the vinyl, I find that track, I rip it, the upload it on the computer and then I play it with the orchestra, then, clearly, your horizon get wider. I like to play evergreeens but never the originals, we do  many remixes and mash-ups then one expects that there is always an audience a bit conscious and the more they are the more you feel judged in a formative way, and that’s why, for me, error in England worth more than a mistake in Italy, because in Italy there are always so many dynamics that go into creating a mess for which you don’t get your bearings anymore. ”

Hipster is the current fashion: guys dressed in a vintage style wearing  handlebar mustaches: every period of the XX century, and it seems that the trend is repeated in the XXI, had its music. Some fashions of the twentieth century, from being underground cultures have become overground, influencing the mass culture, I think of the dark, or punk, to rockabilly, the mods to some extent. Is there the same possibility of creating a cultural landmark, the hallmark of a generation, today, with any musical genre, or is it all too fast, ephemeral and constantly changing?

“Definitely. Let’s say that  in recent years we have got into dynamics enough related to the music business and anything can be music business, everything can be controlled in some way. For me, cultural influence is first of all the curiosity of the people: if the people are not curious, they are passive and the cultural influence isn’t dictated by their sensitivity but by someone from above. I’m not talking about an artistic matter: each of us grows through education, becomes a person and chooses. The choice, however, implies that there is currently a small struggle that has gone lost because of many dynamics and, generally speaking, music and art, photography and still farther all the visual art, they obviously drain away and. I read a very nice article where they said that in the 70’s people made us of  music for 50% in a passive manner (ie you’re driving, you’re in the doctor’s waiting room and there’s the radio, or you’re at the supermarket) and 50% in an active way which means that you were at home, you took a record or a cassette, you chose them and you pressed play. Today, the percentage is arrived at 90 % of passive level  that means that people listen to music anyway because you’re always connected but don’t choose and if you don’t choose, who is able to decide has more scope and this fact has things to be less clear. It’s just a matter of status quo that is different and if it0s different  you have difficulties, unless you’re included in specific situations.”

Are there any standards for this type of music that allow to say, “this is electro swing, this is not” ?

Matteo Marini: “Certainly having a sample and a component closely tied to the swing. Then the electro swing genre has become very interpretable: a vintage sounds sampled and played live becomes electro swing even if the used matrix of sound is not strictly swing. For example this year was released the electro blues  but until last year it was within the genre of electro swing, that being the first genre that has come out has become a bit a kind of a dome under which genres like  electro -jazz, electro, blues, electro-gospel, are ranked in. everything about a remix done either live on stage or just with samples to create new sounds that we define “vintage remix”.”

“My sound” ft. Le Sorelle Marinetti & La Mattanza

“Prima di ogni prima”

VERSIONE IN ITALIANO

Come mai proprio Electro Swing?

Abbiamo sempre suonato molto all’estero perché in qualche maniera troviamo più respiro.
